1 – Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) Plant-protein Value Chain Analysis

Anticipated outcomes from the PDF researcher:

Plant-protein value chain analysis, is part of a larger initiative called Plant Protein Atlantic: Exploring the Value of Plant Proteins in the Atlantic Region with funding from Protein Industries Canada (PIC). For this value chain analysis, we plan to collect primary data from three key stakeholders in the plant protein business – consumers, food processors and manufacturers, and growers from the Atlantic region.

The consumer survey will help us understand what consumers value in high plant protein sources. The ingredient processors and food/feed manufacturers survey will help understand their requirements to expand their operations in the Atlantic region, including the needed resources (labour, skills, infrastructure, and supplier-base), access to capital, and regulatory conditions. The third survey will be with Atlantic Canada growers to understand their willingness to participate in the plant protein value chain and their market access and regulatory challenges.

  1. Undertake an in-depth analysis of the drivers, trends, opportunities, and challenges of plant-based proteins in the Global North;
  2. Examine consumer-recognized values of plant-based proteins
  3. Identify plant protein end-markets of greatest opportunity in Canada, North America, EU and globally;
  4. Identify opportunities for value addition, bottlenecks, and weak links in plant protein supply chain;
  5. Identify the existing infrastructure in the region and the logistics needed for moving materials along the supply chain and value addition – the ports, transport, land value and availability, etc.
  6. Identify areas of collaborations among actors and stakeholders in the plant protein sector;
  7. Identify research and policy gaps in the plant-based protein supply chain and in Atlantic Canada;
  8. Illuminate the regulatory environment- Federal and provincial and regional supports that help or hinder progress -environmental requirements, investment climate, food safety, and provincial parameters around inter-provincial trade;
  9. Host education and collaboration sessions with those engaged across this sector.
