Research Associate for the Project “Pyrogenic carbon and carbonating minerals (PyMiCCS) for enhanced plant growth and carbon capture and storage” § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG
Responsibilities
Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.
Specific Duties
The BMBF-funded PyMiCCS consortium project will examine how the combined application of biochar and rock powder in soils may promote carbon dioxide removal from the atmosphere via soil carbon sequestration and enhanced weathering. The project will use an integrated approach that includes comprehensive field and laboratory experiments and also process-based numerical modelling. The candidate will investigate feedbacks between vegetation, weathering rates in the soil, and dynamics of soil organic matter in different ecosystems and under future climate change, using numerical modelling.
This analysis aims to find out how multiple interacting biogeochemical soil and vegetation processes will affect the overall C-sequestration rate. The model will be developed and evaluated in cooperation with other PyMiCCS projects and then applied to derive a first global map of potential C sequestration by PyMiCCS, including scenarios for the future.
Requirements
A university degree in a relevant field.
The successful candidate needs to have advanced knowledge and experience in at least two of the following research disciplines: Ecology, biogeochemistry, soil science, hydrology, and climate science. Advanced and proven skills in numerical modeling and scientific writing are required. Further assets are team spirit, high motivation, independent thinking and working, and general experience with Unix-like operating systems and associated software. Very good oral and written English skills are necessary.
