The School of Chemical Engineering is one of the six schools of Aalto University. It combines natural sciences and engineering in a unique way. The Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems is looking for a Doctoral Candidate to join the Wood Material Science group

In this position you will work in our recently started WATERWOOD project, which is funded by the Academy of Finland. You will be developing advanced techniques to uncover the link between water sorption and the mechanical behavior of wood and modified wood. These techniques will uncover wood-water interactions at different length scales, from the nanoscale up to the macroscopic level of wood. As a part of the group lead by Associate Professor Lauri Rautkari your work will make an impact towards a more efficient use of wood products in the built environment.

The position can be filled immediately. Our facilities are situated on the main campus of Aalto University in Otaniemi within the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems.

Your background and experience

You have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in wood science/chemistry or any other relevant discipline associated with the thesis topics. You are are expected to be proactive and capable of working in a team, and should possess a good potential in knowledge, skill and attitude towards post-graduate studies in a multidisciplinary field of science. Experience with water sorption measurements and/or analysis of spectroscopic data would be an asset.

Employment

The contract is initially made for one year, with possibility of extension. The expected duration of doctoral studies is four years. The salary is determined according to the salary system of Aalto University. The starting salary is 2540€/month and will increase with responsibilities and performance over time.
