Applied Sciences for Life – this claim describes the unique range of subjects at Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT), all of which clearly and consistently focus on life sciences. We are one of the leading universities of applied life sciences and green technologies. We prepare our graduates to become responsible and highly qualified professionals and executives who are well prepared for a successful career entry. The scientists at HSWT carry out teaching and research at three different campus locations (Freising, Triesdorf, Straubing) focusing on issues of high social relevance, such as sustainable land use, climate change, biodiversity, food technology, or renewable energies.

Our campus in Triesdorf is located approximately 60 kilometers southwest of Nuremberg. Numerous cooperations with the “Bildungszentrum Triesdorf”, an educational center with institutions focusing on agriculture, energy, nutrition, food, and environment, result in valuable synergies for university education and research with a close relation to practical applications.

The Department of Agriculture, Food, and Nutrition, Campus Triesdorf, invites applications for the position of a Professorship in “Data Science” (salary group W2, tenured position) expected to start in the summer semester 2023 or commencing as soon as possible.

Responsibilities in Teaching and Research:

We seek to appoint a candidate for a professorship, which involves a high proportion of research. In practice, this means that the position entails a reduced teaching load, which may amount to a maximum of 50 percent of regular teaching duties of 18 hours per week during the lecture period. The reduced teaching load is initially limited to a period of five years with the option of a further extension period.

Our university expects the successful applicant to obtain third-party funding for research projects in the six figure range, including the acquisition of research assistant positions and positions for the development of transregional and, at best, international networks with high visibility.

The professorship will cover the field of life sciences in research and teaching. Possible research subjects may include agriculture, horticulture, forestry, agricultural engineering, foodstuff, beverage technology, biotechnology, nutrition, water technology, regenerative energies as well as all aspects of environmental protection and landscape planning. Within the aforementioned thematic areas, the incumbent will focus on the collection of sensor data, on reading information from existing local and server-based data sources, and on the filtering, transformation as well as structured and unstructured storage of data.

As part of the responsibilities in teaching and research, the professorship will furthermore cover the modeling of big data and their analysis by means of methods of multivariate statistics and machine learning. This includes deriving information, recommendations for decisions, and control parameters for process automation. In addition to its own projects, the professorship shall work on interdisciplinary research questions in cooperation with colleagues from other faculties as well as provide support for the advanced modeling and processing of data.

Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences expects the incumbent to play an active role in the further development of applied research. Responsibilities of the professorship include the supervision of internship classes, project studies and theses, teaching courses in English language as well as contributing to academic self-administration. The ability to teach specialized topics in adjacent fields of research is highly desired. We offer an interesting work environment at the interface of applied research and practical education, which includes the opportunity to further shape and advance the thematic focus of the professorship according to your own ideas.
