PhD position within the social-ecological junior research group BEATLE at the University of Hohenheim (3 years, 75% TV-L E13) for the “development of an ecological-economic model for the analysis of biodiversity friendly land-use and food policy scenarios” in work package (WP) 3.

PhD position within the social-ecological junior research group BEATLE at the University of Hohenheim (3 years, 75% TV-L E13) for the “development of an ecological-economic model for the analysis of biodiversity friendly land-use and food policy scenarios” in work package (WP) 3.

The BEATLE project aims to generate knowledge on how policy and society can achieve a transformation towards a biodiversity friendly land-use and food system.

The PhD project will focus on WP3, in which ecological relationships are integrated into an economy-wide model (computable general equilibrium) allowing for the ecological-economic simulation of land-use and food policy scenarios. The model will focus on incorporating insect-related ecosystem services (e.g., pollination services, pest control, etc.) and will also differentiate between conventional and organic agricultural production technologies.

For this position, we look for a highly motivated PhD student starting in September or October 2022.

Your tasks involve:

  • Develop an interface to transfer synthesized knowledge of ecological relationships into economic simulation models (collaboration with WP2, led by Dr. Anne Mupepele, Uni Freiburg)
  • Extend existing model database and frameworks to incorporate ecological relationships and depict differences in production technologies
  • Simulation of biodiversity friendly land-use and food policy scenarios
  • Collaborating with the other PhD projects in modeling and analyzing biodiversity friendly transformation scenarios

Your profile:

§   Master or equivalent in agricultural / environmental / applied economics or related field

§   Skills in using GAMS, statistical software (preferably R) and spatial analysis (QGIS, ArcGIS) desired. Previous experience in ecological/economic simulation modelling is an advantage.

§   High motivation to engage with topics related to biodiversity conservation and agricultural policies in Germany and Europe.

§   Strong interest in research, including willingness to write scientific papers

§   Fluent in English. Desirably elementary knowledge in German / willingness to learn German.

§   You work independently; motivated to work in interdisciplinary and international teams

§   Willingness to travel within Germany (Stuttgart-Freiburg) and internationally

BEATLE is a junior research group funded by the BMBF and led by Dr. Arndt Feuerbacher at the University of Hohenheim, running from 07/2022 to 06/2027. For questions please contact Dr. Arndt Feuerbacher (a.feuerbacher@uni-hohenheim.de).
