The mission of the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) as a nationally and internationally active research institute is to deliver solutions for an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable agriculture – together with society. ZALF is a member of the Leibniz Association and is located in Müncheberg (approx. 35 minutes by regional train from Berlin-Lichtenberg). It also maintains a research station with further locations in Dedelow and Paulinenaue.

The DFG funded cooperation project (IR-SOM-ions) with the University Kassel Witzenhausen (Prof. B. Ludwig) focus on the mechanistic understanding of the interaction between OM and cations and their effects on the spectral properties of OM using Vis/NIR, MIR, and micro-MIR to develop an improved procedure for interpreting IR spectra.

Within this project experiments for optimizing infrared spectroscopic characterization and quantification of soil organic matter at scales of increasing complexity will be designed together with the working groups of Prof. B. Ludwig (University Kassel-Witzenhausen). We are offering a part-time position (65%) for three years at our location in Müncheberg as PhD Student (f/m/d).

Your tasks:

       Design and perform sorption experiments
       Analyze of water based mixtures by infrared spectroscopy (Vis/NIR, MIR, and micro-MIR).
       Collect data and evaluate them statistically.
       Present the data at scientific conferences
       Publish the results together with the project partners for the scientific community

Your qualifications:

       MSc or Dipl. in the field of soil science, chemistry or comparable discipline
       Knowledge in lab-work, spectroscopy, and statistics
       Willingness to learn new methods and to work scientifically in interdisciplinary teams
       Experience with modelling systems or big data (beneficial)
       Ability and willingness to analyze complex issues
       Goal-oriented and independent work style
       Creative, enthusiastic, and enjoy scientific work

We offer:

       An interdisciplinary working environment that encourages independence and self-reliance
       A collegial and open-minded working atmosphere in a dynamic research institution
       Cooperation with other working groups (e.g. Prof. B. Ludwig; University Kassel Witzenhausen)
       Classification according to the collective agreement of the federal states level up to E13 TV-L, including special annual payment

Women are particularly encouraged to apply. Applications from severely disabled persons with equal qualifications are favored. Please send your application preferably by e-mail (one PDF file, max. 5 MB; packed PDF documents, archive files like zip, rar etc. Word documents cannot be processed and therefore cannot be considered!) with the usual documents, in particular CV, proof of qualification and certificates, stating the reference number 75-2022 until August 15th,2022 to: Bewerbungen@zalf.de.
