The Chair of Remote Sensing and Landscape Information Systems (FELIS) is looking for a Doctoral Researcher (m/f/d) Id no.: 00002409
Description: Within the recently granted Collaborative Research Center 1537 ECOSENSE, we have a position to offer for a doctoral researcher working on the remote assessment of laser-induced Chlorophyll fluorescence as indicator for canopy vitality using UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles).
It is a highly interdisciplinary project, which is carried out in close cooperation with the faculty of engineering. Your tasks as prospective candidate would be the following:
- Forest surveys (at a field site near Freiburg) using modern terrestrial and UAV-based LiDAR sensing techniques and structural modelling.
- Experiments on canopy vitality and canopy stress detection through existing and innovative remote sensing techniques (both in the field and in the laboratory).
- Supporting the development progress of a novel sensor system (realized by project partners).
- Coordination of activities and exchange with fellow doctoral researchers.
- Participation in the SFB graduate school activities and conferences.
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in the field of remote sensing, environmental sciences, engineering, physics, biology, forest sciences or related areas, who is keen to join an interdisciplinary team of researchers and to work towards a novel tree stress and vitality assessment. In addition to excellent team skills, you should bring good communication skills, fluency in English, a hands-on mentality for conducting and enjoying both field experiments with drones and (in cooperation with the project partners) measurements in the laboratory. Programming skills (especially in Python or Matlab) are an advantage and would round up the profile. Experience with LiDAR and UAV techniques, proficiency in ArcGIS or QGIS and/or background in forestry would be beneficial but are not necessarily required. The candidate should hold a valid driver’s license.
What we offer:
We offer an exciting interdisciplinary topic with a relevant application focus for our society and a salary according to TV-L (75%). The possibility for pursuing a doctoral thesis is given, provided that all formal criteria are fulfilled.
