About University of Hamburg: Universität Hamburg is the largest institution for research and education in the north of Germany. As one of the country’s largest universities, we offer a diverse course spectrum and excellent research opportunities. Universität Hamburg is one of Germany’s younger universities. Its founding was not documented in some provincial foundation charter but in a sober official announcement issued by the Free and Hanseatic City on 1 April 1919.
Institution: Cluster of Excellence „Climate, Climatic Change, and Society (CliCCS)“ (climate research), Department of Earth Sciences, Institute of Soil Science
Salary level: EGR. 13 TV-L (65%)
Start date: as soon as possible, fixed for a period of three years (WissZeitVG)
We are looking for a Research Assiciate (PhD-student) within the Project CLICCS Project C2 “Sustainable Land-Use Scenarios: Soil, Biodiversity, Water, Food and Energy Security”. The CLICCS Project C2 “Sustainable Land-Use Scenarios: Soil, Biodiversity, Water, Food and Energy Security” aims to understand climate changes, taking into account internal variability, extreme events, and unexpected side effects, addressing the natural and social spheres as well as their interactions. Thus CLICCS’ overarching research question is: Which climate futures are possible and which are plausible? CLICCS will investigate how climate changes and how society changes with it, thereby feeding back on climate. It will identify those climate futures that are consistent with both climate and social dynamics (possible), and those we expect to unfold with appreciable probability (plausible).
In the framework of the CLICCS project C2 the research associate is assigned to the following research topics:
– assessment of impacts from land use and land management on soil properties and soil
– processes relevant for soil quality in focus regions of CLICCS-C2 (esp. Metropolitan region of Hamburg, Southern Africa)
– theoretical and empirical research on interaction of soil carbon and soil-water balances under different climate conditions and projections
Start dateas soon as possible, fixed for a period of three years (This is a fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act [Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG]). Application deadline26.08.2022 Scope of workpart-time, Weekly hours65 % of standard work hours per week
Responsibilities: Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.
Specific Duties: CLICCS is an ambitious research program at Universität Hamburg and its partner institutions. Funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), it is part of Germany’s Excellence Strategy. The program aims to understand climate changes, taking into account internal variability, extreme events, and unexpected side effects, addressing the natural and social spheres as well as their interactions.
Thus CLICCS’ overarching research question is: Which climate futures are possible and which are plausible? Specific duties include:
- designing and conducting empirical research on the research question mentioned above, in the focus regions: Southern Africa, Northern Germany
- linking own research with other research activities of the C2 project, especially with model based assessments of agricultural and forest management systems
- presentation of research at international conferences and publication of research results in relevant international journals
