Optimising Hemp for Irish Agriculture and Bioactives: We are looking for a highly motivated student for a 2-year Research Master’s project for the HEA-funded project ÉIREhemp.
Background: Hemp is an emerging high-value multipurpose crop but its nutritive health benefits are underexplored. Hemp possesses unique polysaccharides which in other medicinal plants have been recognised for their immunostimulatory effects.
The Project: This project aims to explore and optimise hemp cultivation in the Irish climate and the production of bioactive polysaccharides.
Hemp fibre and grain varieties will be cultivated and phenotyped in UCD. Our collaborator in Queen’s University Belfast will analyse bioactive polysaccharides. The successful candidate will conduct experiments in UCD and travel to Northern Ireland (UK) frequently.
The Team: The successful candidate will join our hemp research team based at the UCD Belfield campus and will be registered as a full-time post-grad student to the UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science. The candidate will collaborate closely with researchers from Queens University Belfast (QUB) working on the ÉIREhemp project.
The Methods: The successful applicant will be conducting plant cultivation, phenotyping an analysing next-generation sequencing data.
The Stipend: The successful applicant will receive a tax-free stipend of €18,500 per year and full coverage of tuition fees for 2 years. The position will start on the 1st of January 2023.
Your Qualifications: The successful candidate should be enthusiastic, self-motivated and willing to learn new tools and technologies. The project is suited to applicants with a background in plant science or related fields. Applicants should possess a minimum of a B.Sc. Honours degree graded at 2.1, or higher. Proficiency in English language (both written and spoken), an aptitude for critical inquiry and problem solving, as well as the ability to work in a team are essential.

Equality and diversity: UCD is committed to creating an environment where diversity is celebrated and everyone is treated fairly regardless of gender, age, race, disability, ethnic origin, religion, sexual orientation, civil status, family status, or membership of the travelling community. Applications from all suitably qualified candidates will be considered.
