The Faculty 7: Natural and Environmental Sciences invites applications for a Phd position in chemical risk assessment at the Institute for Environmental Sciences in Working Group of Quantitative Landscape Ecology at the Campus Landau/Pfalz, Germany. The successful applicant will work in the EU project PARC . The appointment is for 3 years, starting at 1st January 2023, and subject to the German law on fixed- term contracts in science (WissZeitVG). Salary will be according to 50% of the German public service salary scale TV-L 13.
Topic: In this subproject of the large-scale EU project PARC, you will work on the benchmarking of the risk assessment of pesticides for ecosystems and thus contribute to the foundations for a holistic risk assessment. Your first task will be to compile data from international databases and organizations, especially European project partners, and to conduct analyses to identify factors that determine the risk of pesticides using modern statistical methods and machine learning.
You will be expected to participate in international meetings, establish collaborations with the project partners and publish the results of the research. In the PARC project, 200 partners from 28 countries at the EU level, national authorities and research organizations are collaborating on issues related to the environmental and human health risks of chemicals.
As a member of the Quantitative Landscape Ecology working group and in close cooperation with other working groups of the Institute of Environmental Sciences, you will have access to state-of-the-art equipment and work in a young and interdisciplinary team of researchers.
Requirements: You hold a degree (M.Sc., Diploma) in a relevant field (e.g., ecotoxicology, ecology, biology, landscape ecology, environmental sciences or applied mathematics/computer science) and have a sound knowledge in one or all of the following areas: stress ecology, ecotoxicology, statistics, databases. You are interested in interdisciplinary research with multiple project partners and have the necessary practical skills to conduct computer-based analyses (i.e. fluent in R, Python, SQL or similar languages).
