At the Department of Physical Geography. Closing date: 04 November 2022. The Department of Physical Geography is one of the major departments within the Faculty of Science. The department has approximately 110 employees and educates approximately 1 000 students annually. Education is oriented towards geography, geosciences, biology-earth sciences, and environmental protection and management. The main research areas are: Landscape, Environment and Geomatics, Climate Science and Quaternary Geology, Geomorphology and Glaciology, and Water, Permafrost and Environmental systems. We offer a stimulating and friendly environment in a very diverse and international department.
Project description
This project aims at providing a comprehensive science-based framework for monitoring and managing hydro climatically driven natural hazard crisis and disaster response, in order to protect society against droughts, floods, and heat waves, occurring separately or in combination or sequence.
The research results will provide essential scientific underpinning and support for decision-making on management of such disasters and mitigation of their risks, with focus on exploring the potential of various adaptive solutions/actions in Sweden.
We will develop an innovative online system for monitoring and risk quantification of droughts, floods, heatwaves, and their spatiotemporal relationships across Sweden. The system development will be combined with consideration and assessment of opportunities for climate-change adaptation and disaster risk mitigation in a preventive and responsive crisis management framework. The monitoring system will build on advancement of scientific understanding of current conditions and future projections of drought, flood, and heat wave (co-)occurrence, along with societal vulnerability to these – often compound – hazards.
Project results will form a basis for suggesting preparatory, preventive, and responsive solutions to their (co-)occurrences, considering the Swedish context for such hydro-climatic risk mitigation and crisis management. Project outcomes will be communicated with stakeholders to ensure application of developed tools and action roadmap.
Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.
In order to meet the specific entry requirements, and to fulfil the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of physical geography, the candidate for this position should have acquired a total of 240 higher education credits (of which at least 60 at advanced level), or acquired in some alternative fashion, the equivalent knowledge in geoscience, environmental science or other relevant natural or engineering science. The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.
The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.
Selection
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity and the applicant is required to demonstrate:
- A strong background in computational hydrology focused on extreme events;
- Programming skills, hydrological modeling, remote sensing, machine learning and spatial data analysis;
- A publication track record that clearly reflects the ability to conduct and publish research in the field of hydrology, remote sensing, extreme events, and/or climate change;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English;
- The ability to represent the research group internally and externally for instance at national and international conferences and workshops.
Preferred qualifications:
Great emphasis will be placed on personal competency, and
- Experience from developing methods and tools for applicable analysis of hydroclimatic extreme events, remote sensing, machine learning, big data analysis.
Terms of employment
Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.
The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.
Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
