About University of Hohenheim: Founded in 1818, after the devastating famine, the University of Hohenheim is not only engaged in foundational research but traditionally also in developing innovative solutions for urgent social matters. Today, Hohenheim is the leading University in agricultural research and food  sciences in Germany. Its combination with Natural Sciences as well as Economics and Social Sciences makes it possible to find solutions for many global challenges. This is why the University puts great importance on maintaining an international network with strong partners.

The position at the University of Hohenheim will be embedded within the Institute of Biology and the Hohenheim Center for Livestock Microbiome Research (HoLMiR) and will be associated with the University wide research focus on “Mechanisms and cascades for improved agrobiological nitrogen transfer to protein production”. This research focus addresses the question of how losses that occur in the production of proteins along the production chain involving soil, plants and animals through to food can be minimized.

To answer this question, we aim to fundamentally understand the mechanisms of nitrogen and protein conversions in microorganisms, plants and animals. Research of this independent Research Group is envisaged in characterizing influencing factors, interactions of microorganisms with their hosts, and understanding the interactions of nitrogen metabolism with other areas of metabolism. Teaching within the curriculum of the study program biology, agricultural biology and/or agriculture is expected in form of research oriented, specialized courses.

We aim at recruiting an early career Post-Doc wishing to establish an independent research group to follow an academic career. Candidates should be highly motivated to work in an international team and are expected to contribute a research focus in any modern topic of microbiology with relation to nitrogen metabolism and nitrogen transformation, for example by studying symbiotic systems in the gut of (farm) animals, general mechanisms of metabolic priorization, or regulatory networks. Experience in interdisciplinary work with plant and animal biologists is desirable. Proficiency in English and good communication skills are essential, as is a completed doctoral degree and the proven ability to carry out research independently. German language skills are a plus.
