Dr. Dengjun (Kevin) Wang in the School of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences at Auburn University is recruiting a Ph.D. student to begin in the Summer or Fall 2023. The selected candidate will work on the transformation of pre- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment. While the focus of this project is on the abiotic transformation of PFAS, biotransformation and the synergies between abiotic transformation and biotransformation will also be examined at a high level to advance our current knowledge on PFAS transformation.
The selected candidate will have the opportunity to working with scientists, engineers, and consultants at Auburn and other U.S. institutions, federal government, Navy, and consulting industry. The selected candidate will also have the opportunity to work directly with the Director of Mass Spec Center at Auburn University for PFAS and transformation product analyses by HPLC-HRMS/MS
Required Qualifications:
• An earned MS (preferred) or bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Chemistry, Soil Science, or a closely related field.
• Good communication skills, team spirits, and dedication to academic excellence.
• Basic knowledge on PFAS and their precursors found in the environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Hand on experiences on the analyses of PFAS and PFAS precursors by HPLC-MS/MS or HPLC-HRMS/MS, and compound structure identification are significantly preferable.
• Basic knowledge or skills of ORIGIN, MATLAB, R, or Python software.
