The Philipps University, founded in 1527, offers multiple award-winning teaching for around 22,000 students and tackles the important issues of our time with excellent research across a broad spectrum of science. At the Faculty of Biology, the research group Evolutionary Ecology of Plants, Prof. Dr. Robert R. Junker, offers one third-party funded part-time position (subject to approval by the DFG) for a Research assistant (PhD student) in plant and microbiome responses to land use
The position is offered for a period of 3 years, if no former times of qualification must be considered. The starting date is as soon as possible. The position is part-time (65 % of regular working hours) with salary of a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13, 65 %).
Tasks:
The project will be part of the Biodiversity Exploratories funded by the German Science Foundation, DFG. In experiments in the field, in a common garden, as well as in the greenhouse, we will track plant and microbiome responses to land use changes. Specifically, we will:
- track the temporal trajectory of community responses to experimental land-use treatments compare morphological and physiological responses of plant communities in the common garden and in the REX / LUX experiments and perform greenhouse experiments to investigate the role of the microbiome in plant responses to land use changes
The position is limited to a time period deemed adequate for the completion of a doctoral degree. As part of the assigned duties, there will be ample opportunity to conduct the independent scientific research necessary for the completion of a doctorate. The limitation complies to § 2, 1 WissZeitVG.
Profile:
- MSc-degree or equivalent in Biology, Ecology or a related discipline interest and, preferably, practical experience in ecological field research, community ecology as well as molecularand microbiological methods •
- expertise in vegetation surveys and in statistical data analysis (preferably with R) is expected very good organizational and communication skills (e.g. annual meetings, reporting, workshops).
- Longer research stays in the Biodiversity Exploratories are planned requirements include a creative, analytical and critical mindset, the ability to work independently and to further develop the project •
- willingness to work in a team, good German and English oral and writing skills and a driving license category B
The willingness for further scientific qualification (e.g. a PhD thesis within the field of ecology) is expected.
