PhD Student: Spatial, Sociological, and Economic Drivers of Northern Bobwhite Populations:

Description: We are looking for an enthusiastic, determined, and self-starting PhD student to lead a field project on how landscape pattern and agricultural management affects northern bobwhite populations. The research also includes a social science component where mixed-method approaches will be used to understand social and economic drivers of land management decisions.

The student will have the flexibility to focus on their interests within these domains. A considerable amount of field work is required but the project is adequately funded to support field technicians. Housing will be provided while the student is in the field but not while working from campus.

Throughout the student’s degree program, they will develop expertise in landscape ecology, population ecology, quantitative approaches (e.g., Bayesian analyses), and social sciences survey methods that will prepare the student for a successful career in wildlife science. The student will be advised by James A. Martin (Associate Professor, UGA and leader of the Gamebird and Managed Ecosystems Lab) and co-advised by Elizabeth Pienaar (Associate Professor, UGA and leader of the Human Dimensions of Wildlife Conservation Lab). The student will also collaborate with other scientists (e.g., Dr. Chloé Nater, Norwegian Institute for Nature Research) and state agency research biologists. Students in the GAME Lab are provided professional development that is specific to their career goals.

Qualifications: MS or BS degree conferred by August 1, 2023, in wildlife management, ecology, or a related discipline. Students without a MS will be considered. The successful candidate must have the desire to develop exceptional quantitative skills and the capacity to learn computer languages suitable for model development (e.g., R, Python, etc.). The student should also be personable and maintain a commitment to collaborative teamwork to meet objectives. The student must be dedicated to open science practices.
