Description The Environmental Change and Sustainability Lab at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is recruiting one PhD student to start in Fall 2023. The successful candidate will have previous experience with geospatial modeling and analysis, numerical modeling of environmental systems, or other related quantitative approaches. This position offers the opportunity for the selected applicant to design research that is aligned with their interests and previous experience.

Candidates with some experience in independent research, peer-reviewed publications, and an interest in addressing pressing sustainability problems in energy, water and/or food systems are strongly encouraged to apply. The student will be enrolled in UTRGV’s PhD program in Mathematics and Statistics with Interdisciplinary Applications.

The student will be jointly advised by Dr. Rafael M. Almeida, assistant professor in UTRGV’s School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences, and Dr. Rafael Schmitt, senior scientist at Stanford University’s Woods Institute for the Environment. The student will be based at UTRGV (Edinburg campus), with possible opportunities to spend time at Stanford. This position carries a standard annual stipend of $18,000 plus full support with tuition. Additional resources will be available to complement the annual stipend depending on future funding.
