Research at CML – Industrial Ecology
CML is one of the leading institutes in environmental sustainability worldwide. Our mission is to contribute to sustainable governance of biodiversity and natural resources. CML offers environmental education, and has two distinct research programmes: Conservation Biology and Industrial Ecology, that collaborate through their common mission. The Industrial Ecology programme is a world-leader in its field and focusses on the development and application of tools for decision-making on sustainable production and consumption.

Industrial Ecology takes a systemic approach, integrating technical, environmental, and social aspects. It uses methods such as Material Flow Accounting (MFA), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) or Input-Output Analysis (IOA). The department offers a dynamic, international, and collaborative working environment and hosts many leading experts in the field.

Research at our faculty
The Faculty of Science is a world-class faculty where staff and students work together in a dynamic international environment. It is a faculty where personal and academic development are top priorities. Our people are committed to expand fundamental knowledge by curiosity, work on global challenges through the development of science-based solutions that might take them beyond the borders of their own discipline.

The research carried out at the Faculty of Science is very diverse, ranging from mathematics, information science, astronomy, physics, chemistry and bio-pharmaceutical sciences to biology and environmental sciences. The research activities are organised in eight institutes. These institutes offer eight bachelor’s and twelve master’s programmes. The faculty has grown strongly in recent years and now has more than 2800 staff and almost 6000 students. We are located at the heart of Leiden’s Bio Science Park, one of Europe’s biggest science parks, where university and business life come together.
