The Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP) at the University of Bremen offers at the earliest possible date a Scientific Assistant (postdoc) limited for 3 years for High Resolution Satellite Remote Sensing of Greenhouse Gases

Emissions of the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) are the primary cause of climate change. By means of satellites, anthropogenic emission sources of CO2 and CH4 can be identified and their emissions determined. The department “Physics and Chemistry of the Atmosphere” of the Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP) at the University of Bremen conducts leading international research in the field of greenhouse gas remote sensing using satellite and aircraft data in combination with modelling.

To support our future research activities within European projects on high resolution satellite remote sensing of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4) we are looking for a dedicated scientist at PostDoc level. The main focus of the planned research activities is the development of novel methods for the derivation of accurate atmospheric CO2, and CH4 information on localised emission sources from hyperspectral and multispectral satellite data (PRISMA, EnMAP etc.). The resulting data products shall be used to derive quantitative information on greenhouse gas emissions.

The research activities are part of European research initiatives and will be performed in cooperation with European partners, supported by European Space Agency ESA and the European Commission.

Skills/Qualifications

  • A scientific university degree (Diplom/Master/MSc) in physics, geophysics, meteorology or related fields., with an average grade better than 2.0 in the German system or B in the Anglo-Saxon grading system
  • A PhD degree  
  • Strong background in the field of satellite remote sensing, ideally with a focus on the atmosphere
  • Very good knowledge and relevant experience in at least one of the following fields: radiative transfer, machine learning applications, greenhouse gas measurements, retrieval and inverse methods, atmospheric modelling
  • Very good programming skills in at least one high-level programming language (ideally Python) and good Linux skills (including shell scripting)
  • Good communication skills, due to cooperation with European partners
  • Very good knowledge of the English language. For non-German speaking applicants, willingness to learn German and to attend German language classes.
