Description: One M.S. position is available in the Division of Coastal Sciences, School of Ocean Science and Engineering, The University of Southern Mississippi . The campus is located at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in the City of Ocean Springs on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The graduate assistantship will start in Fall 2023. However, the potential student is expected to start to work as a technician in the Eco-spatial lab before the fall semester.

The research focuses on the impact of sea-level rise and freshwater diversions on coastal wetlands. Coastal wetlands are among the most productive ecosystems in the world and provide a wide variety of key ecosystem services. They are sensitive to water level and salinity changes due to sea-level rise and freshwater diversions. Freshwater diversions also alter nutrient and sediment dynamics in estuaries. The research will involve field experiments and computer model simulations.

Qualifications: Applicants should be highly motivated to learn new research skills, have a BS with quantitative background in ecology, geography, or a closely related field with a GPA of 3.0 and above. Experiences in quantitative modeling, Bayesian statistics, and/or GIS/Remote Sensing are desirable but not required. Assistantship with competitive stipend ($1900/month) and tuition waiver will be provided.
