Dr. Aaron Gooley’s Wildlife Ecology & Ecotoxicology Laboratory at Indiana State University (ISU) is seeking graduate applications (MS or PhD) from highly motivated and capable students to study wildlife ecology and/or ecotoxicology in Indiana. Positions supported by teaching assistantships will be available to start August 2023.
Graduate research projects will be expected to combine traditional field ecology studies with techniques and technology such as ecotoxicology, GIS habitat analysis, mark-recapture, telemetry, and/or genetics. The student will conduct field-based data collection during the summer as well as participate in laboratory work during the academic year.
Fieldwork may involve canoeing/boating, mud, bugs, heat, handling animals, and other strenuous dirty-job type work (need to be able to lift ~50lbs). There is opportunity for highly motivated and capable students to develop their own project based off of their interests and skills. Current lab projects involve turtles, pollinators, and bats.
Qualifications – For MS: BS by start date in ecology, biology, zoology, wildlife, or a related field – For PhD: MS by start date in ecology, biology, zoology, wildlife, or a related field (Exceptional students with a B.S. may be considered) – Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 – GRE verbal and quantitative scores of at least 150; GRE scores are required if applicant does not yet have a graduate degree. – Valid driver’s license.
Successful applicants will be self-motivated, have a strong interest in wildlife ecology and/or related disciplines (e.g., herpetology, mammalogy, entomology, ecotoxicology) and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills (including proficiency searching and reviewing peer-reviewed literature). Prior experience with research, fieldwork, boats/canoes, and common statistical software packages are preferred. Experience with ecotoxicology/analytical chemistry (e.g., LC-MS/MS), GIS, genetic analysis, or other modern analytical techniques/tools that could enhance a graduate project are a plus.
