Description: The UT Tyler department of biology invites applications for (1) Graduate student to conduct research on wetland hydrology characteristics of Agricultural Conservation Easement Program-Wetland Reserve Easements (ACEP-WRE) in East Texas and Western Louisiana. The successful candidate would join a multi-state project funded by USDA NRCS to study present-day wetland easement program effectiveness at the national scale.
The main goal is to develop a national-scale ecological monitoring and assessment framework to support the ACEP-WRE Program. This monitoring framework will broadly encompass wetland structure and function, which will be used to facilitate easement assessment within different regions.
The research team at UT Tyler is led by Dr. Lance Williams with the following collaborators: Dr. Ryan Shartau, Dr. Matthew Greenwold, Ms. Marsha Williams, MS. Jessica Coleman, and Mr. Jared Dickson.
This project will evaluate 30 ACEP-WRE sites in East Texas and Western Louisiana, specifically comparing them to naturally occurring wetlands that are minimally disturbed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducting independent research
- Fieldwork will include the installation and monitoring of sensors and stations.
- Lab work will consist of modeling hydrology using geospatial databases and software, such as LiDAR and other remote sensing products.
- Presenting results at regional and national conferences and writing publications.
- Assisting with other wetland-specific projects related to this study.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in science with a major in biology or a closely related field from an accredited college or university with a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 or equivalent. A satisfactory grade point average on all prior advanced (junior, senior, and graduate) work taken. Contact Person Ms. Jessica Coleman (Jcoleman@uttyler.edu), Ms. Marsha Williams (mwilliams@uttyler.edu), and/or Dr. Lance William (lwilliams@uttyler.edu)
