In this PhD project (P06), we study the interaction of several compartments (e.g. skin and colon) and effects of the microbiome for alpha-Gal allergy development (red meat allergy). We already established protocols for sensitization and anaphylactic responses of alpha-Gal deficient pigs.
Our next aim is to establish germ-free (gnotobiotic) pig models to evaluate the influence of microbial consortia on sensitization and allergy development. We plan to perform fecal microbial transfers and further apply cutting-edge microbiota and metabolite profiling methodologies to identify protective microorganisms and molecules. The perspective of this project is to fundamentally understand underlying immune cell mechanisms and to implement a microbiome-based approach to inhibit allergy development.
