The State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart (SMNS) with ca. 170 employees is one of the largest natural history museums in Germany and sees itself as a future-oriented research and educational institution. Thanks to a research initiative supported by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts, regional changes in biodiversity are thoroughly investigated in order to better face current and future challenges.
At the interface between laboratory logistics/technology and research, we are looking for a full-time technical assistant (m/f/d) specializing in genomic methods, with a focus on next generation sequencing technology and museum collections.
This position is to be integrated in the research group “Speciation and Hybridization” led by Dr. Ricardo Pereira. The candidate is expected to have interest in customizing and developing genomic methods to a variety of non-model organisms that are available in museum collections.
Your main tasks are:
- Budgeting and purchasing of lab equipment for genomic methods
- Reliable assurance of the basic technical supply of the established genomic laboratory
- Management of general consumables
- Management of tissue samples
- Implementation and coordination of laboratory work for current research projects (e.g. dissection, DNA and RNA extraction, purification, library preparation for next generation sequencing)
- Computer processing of raw sequencing data and ancillary data (e.g. georeferencing, morphometrics)
- Animal care in an insectary
- Implementation and monitoring of safety-related regulations (safety officer including keeping the list of hazardous substances) and hygiene standards
Requirements:
- Completed vocational training as a technical assistant (BTA, MTA, LTA), biology laboratory assistant or possibly a comparable university education in the field of biology (Bachelor) with proven practical and theoretical expertise. Relevant professional experience and a broad knowledge of methods are desired or an advantage.
- Diverse methodological knowledge and experience in classical molecular biology (e.g. Sanger sequencing) and experience or strong interest in next generation sequencing (e.g. ddRAD, target capture, and whole genome sequencing data)
- Ability to work independently
- Tech affinity and confidence in handling of common IT systems and databases
- High level of communication skills in English and German, and the ability to work in an international team
- Organizational skills
