We seek a PhD student to join the Global Ecology Research Group at the University of Florida’s Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center, part of the UF Wildlife Ecology and Conservation department. We are seeking a highly motivated and independent graduate student to join us (expected start date is Fall 2024) to work on an exciting project aimed at understanding the multifunctional utility and equity of urban greenspaces.

Urban greenspaces are increasingly important as critical habitat for biodiversity and as keystone landscape elements that support ecosystem services for human well-being.

The PhD project will focus on assessing and optimizing urban greenspace utility for biodiversity and humans. The project will use a big data approach, using fine-scale replication units (i.e., individual urban greenspaces) at large spatial scales. Novel datasets, including citizen science data and crowd-sourced reviews, will be integrated to quantify the utility and equality of utility in the design and management of urban greenspaces.

Throughout the candidature, the candidate will spend time in Gainesville (on the main UF campus) and at the Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center in Davie, Florida. The project will collaborate closely with other faculty in the research and education center, such as Dr. Jiangxiao Qiu.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a Master’s degree in a relevant field, such as ecology, environmental science, geography, or urban planning, and strong quantitative skills. Experience with coding in R is required, and experience with GIS and statistical modeling is desirable. The candidate should have excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
