Agroecosystem Nutrient Cycling Research Group at University of Kentucky: We study controls on the flow of carbon and nutrients through soils, use research findings to develop sustainable management practices and resilient production systems, and communicate these practices and the science behind them to researchers, students, and agricultural stakeholders.

Our research applies principles of agronomy, ecology, and biogeochemistry to investigate interactions between agricultural management and nutrient cycling using laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments. We are a collaborative and inclusive team that values diverse perspectives.

PhD Graduate Assistantships:

Modeling of mixed cover crops and cropping system analysis

The Agroecosystem Nutrient Cycling Laboratory and the Grain Crops Physiology Laboratory are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated PhD student. The student will integrate field research and crop modeling to study the effects of cover crops on nitrogen cycling, water dynamics, and yield stability in agroecosystems. In particular, the student will use existing field experimental data to test a new intercropping module for cover crop mixtures in DSSAT working in collaboration with University of Florida.

The student will perform simulation studies to optimize cover crop mixtures for nitrogen and water dynamics in cropping systems. They will work on an interdisciplinary team that includes soil scientists, crop ecologists, crop modelers, and programmers as part of a USDA-funded project.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a B.S. or M.S. degree in agronomy, soil science, crop science, ecology, biogeochemistry, environmental science, or a related field and experience working in a research setting. Strong organizational, quantitative, and communication skills are required.

Some experience with DSSAT or another crop modeling software is required. The candidate will complete coursework necessary for a PhD in Integrated Plant and Soil Sciences with an agreed upon emphasis area of their choosing (please see https://ipss.ca.uky.edu/  for more information).

Pay:  The assistantship includes a generous stipend, tuition waiver, and health insurance.

To apply: Application process will remain open until a suitable candidate is identified. Candidates interested in this exciting opportunity should complete this form: https://forms.gle/iHXv5EfQbMHxb7xs8

Postdoctoral Researcher:

Cover crops and nitrogen cycling

The Agroecosystem Nutrient Cycling Laboratory is seeking a motivated postdoctoral scientist to begin in summer or fall of 2023. The postdoc will coordinate a multi-state project investigating the effects of winter cover crops on nitrogen fertilizer requirements for corn and cotton. A robust, 45-site-year dataset is nearing completion, providing exciting opportunities for high-impact publications in the near term.

In addition, there are many opportunities to continue and expand collaborations and gain skills in field research, statistical analysis, process-based modeling, and mentoring as part of the USDA-funded Precision Sustainable Agriculture project https://www.precisionsustainableag.org/ . Professional development activities are expected and fully funded.

Qualifications:  The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in soil science, agronomy, crop science, ecology, or a related field. Strong organizational, quantitative, and communication skills are required.

Pay: Health insurance is provided and salary is competitive and negotiable.
