The Fire & Dryland Ecosystems Lab NRE Snevada is hiring 2 postdocs & a forestry technician for NSF-funded projects modeling fire regimes & fire effects on carbon cycling & water security:

1 – Postdoctoral Scholar Position: Wildfire Effects on Ecosystem Carbon Dynamics:

The Fire & Dryland Ecosystems Lab led by Dr. Erin Hanan in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position starting in fall 2023. The postdoc will work on a project investigating how wildfire affects carbon cycling in Great Basin ecosystems.

This NSF-funded project is a collaboration among the University of Nevada-Reno (UNR), the Desert Research Institute (DRI), and the University of Nevada Las Vegas. The postdoc will be using several high-resolution datasets from remote sensing and an array of sensors deployed in open air burn experiments to expand and improving land surface models to better capture fire effects on carbon source/sink dynamics.

We seek applicants with extensive experience in developing and running process-based, land surface models (e.g., RHESSys, CLM, ELM-FATES, etc.). The postdoc will have access to substantial existing data from past and ongoing studies, a network of unique study sites, and a dynamic team of investigators.

Successful applicants will be expected to work independently as well as collaboratively as a member of the research group, participate in model development, and publish research results. Candidates with a strong background in biogeochemistry and quantitative and/or programming skills are especially encouraged to apply.

Requirements

  • PhD in hydrology, engineering, ecology, environmental science, or a closely related discipline
  • Experience working with process-based, ecosystem models
  • Excellent written and computational skills

Preferred skills

  • Unix/Linux development experience using C and shell scripts
  • Experience with R and GitHub

To express interest in the position, prospective postdocs should contact Dr. Hanan (ehanan@unr.edu)  prior to beginning a formal application and should email a description of research interests and professional goals and a CV. We encourage applicants from any race, color, religion, ethnic, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, age, or veteran status.

2 –  Postdoctoral Scholar Position: Wildfire Risk and Effects on Water Security in the Pacific Northwest:

The Fire & Dryland Ecosystems Lab led by Dr. Erin Hanan in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position starting in summer or fall 2023.

The postdoc will work on two closely related interdisciplinary projects investigating how wildfire risk is changing in the Pacific Northwest and how fire will affect water security in municipal watersheds. These NASA and US Forest Service-funded projects are collaborations among the University of Nevada-Reno (UNR), Washington State University (WSU), Oregon State University (OSU), the University of Idaho (UI) and the US Forest Service.

The postdoc will be expanding and improving the ecohydrologic–biogeochemical model RHESSys to better simulate fire regimes and their effects wildfire on water quantity and quality.

The postdoc will have access to substantial existing data from past and ongoing studies, a network of unique study sites, and a dynamic team of investigators. Successful applicants will be expected to work independently as well as collaboratively as a member of the research group, participate in model development, and publish their research results.

The position will be based in Reno and will involve travel to participate in stakeholder meetings in Oregon and Washington. We seek applicants with strong skills in ecohydrology, programming, and process-based modeling.

Requirements

  • PhD in hydrology, engineering, ecology, environmental science, or a closely related discipline
  • Experience working with process-based models
  • Excellent written, verbal, and computation skills

Preferred skills

  • Unix/Linux development experience using C and shell scripts
  • Experience with R and GitHub

To express interest in the position, prospective postdocs should contact Dr. Hanan (ehanan@unr.edu)  prior to beginning a formal application and should email a description of research interests and professional goals and a CV. 3 – Short Term Forestry Field Position at the University of Nevada, Reno:

Position Description: Dr. Erin Hanan and Dr. Jonathan Greenberg are looking for someone with montane forestry experience to assist in a project doing terrestrial laser scanning (“TLS”) of the Northern Sierra Nevada Mountains during the period of May to mid/late August, with a potential to extend the time later into the Fall.

The goal of the project is to provide three-dimensional ladder fuel information for modeling purposes. Most of the work will be in assisting the TLS and fuels teams, and requires moving relatively bulky equipment into forest plots, so the ability to carry > 50 lbs is suggested (backpacking experience is ideal).

Folks working on this project will get trained in how to set up and use a terrestrial laser scanner (a relatively rare opportunity), as well as learn forest fuels measurements. The project is a collaboration between the Fire & Dryland Ecosystems Lab run by Dr. Erin Hanan and the Global

Environmental Analysis and Remote Sensing (GEARS) lab run by Dr. Jonathan Greenberg.

This project is funded by the CAL FIRE Forest Health Grant. Technicians will be based out of Reno but will be doing overnights at the more distant plots. Position covers lodging and per diem while in the field.

Preferred qualifications: experience working in montane forests, experience with forest mensuration, first aid/CPR, off road driving, ability to carry at least 50 lbs

To apply: please send an email to Dr. Jonathan Greenberg (jgreenberg@unr.edu)  with a brief introduction, and include your CV or resume and provide contact information for three professional references. Applications submitted before June 1 will be given full consideration.
