The Surface Processes Group at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, led by Dr. Tian Y. Dong, is looking for two exceptional master’s students in [Ocean, Coastal, and Earth Science] to join us for Fall 2023, Spring 2024, or Fall 2024. [Our group] uses field and remotely sensed observations, numerical models, and theories to study surface processes in environments such as rivers, deltas, and coastal systems and the associated development of sedimentary records.

As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to propose and develop your projects in the broad theme of Earth and planetary surface processes, using a range of approaches including but not limited to remote sensing, field, and numerical modeling studies.

You will have access to state-of-the-art resources, such as three drones with LiDAR and Multispectral cameras, which you can use to collect high-resolution topography data and develop your research skills. We are pleased to offer fully funded positions, including a 9-month salary of $15,000 for two subsequent academic years and support with tuition and fees.

We also provide additional support for research supplies, professional development travel to a relevant conference, and opportunities to participate in research projects outside your own. To be eligible for this opportunity, you should have a strong Earth and planetary science background and proficiency in a coding language (Python, R, or MATLAB), GIS software, a vector graphics editor, and/or drone survey and data processing experience. We welcome applicants from diverse academic backgrounds and cultures and encourage you to share your unique perspectives and ideas.
