The World Vegetable Center (WorldVeg) is a non-profit, autonomous international agricultural research center with headquarters in Taiwan and five regional offices in Africa and Asia. WorldVeg conducts research and development programs that contribute to realizing the potential of vegetables for healthier lives and more resilient livelihoods.
WorldVeg is pleased to launch a student research fellowship program on the occasion of its Golden Jubilee Year. MSc and PhD students from around the world are invited to conduct part of their degree programs at WorldVegโs headquarters in Taiwan. Successful candidates will work within the context of WorldVegโs four flagship programs:
Safe and Sustainable Value Chains; Healthy Diets; Vegetable Diversity and Improvement; and Enabling Impact. Students will participate in ongoing research projects while ensuring a good fit with the studentโs interest and background โ in consultation with the student and the faculty mentor of the university awarding the degree.
Fellowship details
For 2023, the Center provides fellowships to MSc and PhD students around the world to conduct research at its headquarters in Taiwan. The fellowship provides the following support:
- A stipend of US$500/month to cover living expenses in Taiwan
- Accommodation at WorldVeg HQ for the duration of stay in Taiwan
- Round trip direct route economy airfare to/from Taiwan
- Travel, health and accident insurance coverage
Duration
MSc students: 3 to 12 months
PhD students: 6 to 24 months
Supervision
Students will be supervised by scientists from WorldVeg in close collaboration with the studentsโ university faculty mentors. If needed, students will be offered additional training such as research methodology, data management, scientific writing, etc.
Research topics
Please refer to the list of research topics provided as part of this announcement. These are indicative areas for research. However, alternative topics in the five broad areas of research may also be considered.
Location
Students will be based at WorldVeg Headquarters in Shanhua, Tainan, Taiwan. The Centerโs campus has excellent accommodation, cafeteria and recreation facilities.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted using the application form along with a statement of interest (no longer than 2 pages) by email to studentresearch@worldveg.org. The application and statement of interest should be in English. Along with the application, students must also submit the following:
- Copy of passport;
- Curriculum Vitae (CV), work history and education. CVs should be no longer than two pages;
- Proof of registration at an accredited university for MSc and PhD programs;
- A letter of authorization from the Dean/Head of Department of the university, permitting the student to undertake research at WorldVeg as part of the course requirements.
Selection process
Only students who are shortlisted for a virtual interview will be informed. Accepted students will be permitted to start their research work, based on an agreement signed between the student and WorldVeg. The starting date will be discussed and mutually agreed between the student, WorldVeg and academic supervisors.
