The Doctorate in Veterinary Internal, Surgical and Obstetrical Clinical Sciences trains researchers capable of integrating themselves within public or private work contexts with skills allowing for project, management and coordination autonomy expendable in the field of veterinary clinical research and translational medicine, with public and private bodies, and in the pharmaceutical/technological/mangimistic industry.
Objectives of the course are pursued through:1. interdisciplinarity, ensuring a high qualification in the fields of research and innovation; 2. internationalisation, through courses and seminars run by foreign researchers and internship periods abroad; 3. a multi and interdisciplinary platform guaranteed by the confluence and integration of strategic sectors of veterinary medical education and translational medicine.

Project: Efficacy of domperidone in improving the clinical picture of dogs with chronic kidney disease and potential impact on owners’ well-being in a one-health perspective.
Call for tender: DM 117/2023
Title Scholarship: medical, pharmaceutical and veterinary medical sciences
Research activity description: The efficacy of dopaminergic antagonists in improving renal plasma flow and glomerular filtration rate has been demonstrated in dogs since the ‘90s. In recent years, domperidone (a dopaminergic receptor antagonist) has been shown to be effective in slowing the progression of renal disease in the CanL affected with chronic kidney disease. It is of current interest to assess whether the proposed efficacy model can also be extended to the non-leishmaniotic dog. Furthermore, as chronic kidney disease can have a negative impact on the patient’s and owner’s quality of life, the evaluation of improved survival time and well-being is also of interest from a one-health perspective.
Project: Near-infrared / Indocyanine green (NIR/ICG): a new navigation system in veterinary surgery.
Call for tender: DM 118/2023
Title Scholarship: medical, pharmaceutical and veterinary medical sciences
Research activity description: The project aims to further investigate the employment of Near-infrared / Indocyanine green (NIR/ICG) technology as a navigation system in veterinary surgery as a translational model for human medicine to provide real-time visualization of anatomical structures during surgical procedures.
The research is based on the study of this innovative technology in a multi-disciplinary view with ONE-Health approach in order to expand the knowledge about the technique, efficacy and safety in spontaneous small animal disease models in order to implement the possibilities of use in guided surgery in precision medicine, improving the care of both human and animal patients. The objectives of the study will be: identification of tumor margins and metastatic lymph nodes; evaluation of tissue perfusion and flow monitoring; and mapping of the lymphatic system.
Project: Innovative interventions and therapies to improve fertility in farm animals reducing the use of antibiotics.
Call for tender: DM 118/2023
Title Scholarship: medical, pharmaceutical and veterinary medical sciences
Research activity description: It is now well known that antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and hormones are widely used in animal husbandry, both for prevention and treatment of common diseases, such as mastitis, metritis…but 50-80% of the active ingredient ends up in milk, meat and soil, posing health risks to consumers. The drugs and/or hormones are, in fact, eliminated with animal dejections, which is also often used as fertilizer for agricultural use. This results in the wider contamination of both surface and deep waters through leachate, dispersion and runoff. This project, therefore, aims to develop innovative therapies that can reduce the use of antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and hormones, in livestock farms, with a view to One Health.
Admission requirements:
LM-42 Veterinary medicine
Admission tests: The selection will be based on titles, the evaluation of the research project regarding the themes of the doctorate, and an oral examination. The research project will be preventively sent by the candidate together with the admission documents. The research project (maximum 3000 words excluding the bibliography) is mandatory for the admission to the oral examination and should include at least the following fields: scientific background, aim of the study, methodology (including the statistical analysis), expected results, perspectives and possible advantages.
The candidate will be admitted to the oral examination only if the evaluation of the titles and research project got a positive evaluation. During the oral examination, the knowledge of the English language, will be also evaluated.
Admission tests for foreigners:
Foreign candidates can choose to take the entrance exam in Italian or English

The translation must be signed under the applicant’s own responsibility in order to allow the qualification to be recognized.
The suitability of qualifications obtained abroad will be evaluated by the Judging Commission in accordance with the regulations in force in Italy and in the country where the qualification was obtained and relative treaties and international agreements on the recognition of qualifications for the continuation of studies.
In case of admission to the Ph.D. programme, applicants must submit, within 60 days from the date of registration, the following documentation:
