The Department of Horticulture and Food Technology, Campus Weihenstephan (Freising), invites applications for the position of a Professorship in “Plant Breeding and Ornamental Horticulture” (salary group W2, tenured position) expected to start in the winter semester 2024 / 2025 or commencing as soon as possible.

Responsibilities in Teaching and Research:

The professorship offers undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the following topics:

  • horticultural plant breeding: basic genetics, methods of plant breeding, and basic biotechnology
  • ornamental plant cultivation: botanical basics, basics of ornamental plant cultivation, and in-depth topics of ornamental plant cultivation

The professorship participates in interdisciplinary modules in the fields of horticulture, technology, and economics. Networking within the study program of the faculty and beyond is desired. The teaching of the professorship is offered in German and English. Active participation in the strategic development of the faculty and the future range of courses is expected.

The professors of the faculty concentrate their research activities at the Institute of Horticulture (IGB). The professorship is expected to show a strong commitment to applied research and to the development of the IGB. The university expects the successful candidate to play an active role in the further development of applied research. Responsibilities of the professorship include the supervision of internships, project papers and theses, teaching courses in English language as well as participation in academic self-administration.

The ability to teach specialized topics in adjacent fields of research is highly desired. Your Profile:

You have a university degree in horticulture or a related field of study. During your professional career, you have acquired in-depth expertise in plant breeding and ornamental horticulture and are very familiar with modern methods in these areas. You are enthusiastic about interactive teaching, develop study contents further, and design contemporary seminar-style teaching with a high degree of practical relevance.

Furthermore, you have experience in applied research and the acquisition of projects. You are a team player, enjoy interdisciplinary work, and have good contacts to business practice, research institutions, and relevant associations. Requirements:

  1. completed first university degree
  2. pedagogical aptitude
  3. particular ability for scientific and scholarly work as proven by a doctoral degree or comparable academic qualification (in German: “Gutachten über promotionsadäquate Leistungen”)
  4. furthermore, we require expertise in the application or development of scientific findings and methods obtained during a period of at least five years of professional practice after graduation from university; of these, at least three years must be in a field outside university; professional experience outside university might be recognized if the candidate has spent a significant part of the position working in a cooperation between university and non-university institutions for a minimum of five years
