Our Profile: The RWTH Aachen University exploits strong research networks and the intellectual curiosity of its staff to address bold scientific questions, transfer forefront knowledge and drive innovative discoveries that impact global challenges.

Research in the Trujillo lab focuses on understanding ubiquitin signalling and its roles in the regulation of immune responses and general protein homeostasis (Brillada et al. Essays in Biochem. 2022; Trenner et al. Annual Reviews 2021; Trujillo et al. New Phytologist 2021). Ubiquitination is a post-translational modification involved in all aspect of cellular physiology, which is critical in maintaining homeostasis during stress.

Previous and ongoing research in the Lab has uncovered key roles of ubiquitination in the regulation of intracellular vesicle transport (Saeed et al. Current Biology 2023), autophagy (Brillada et al. Plant Cell 2021), as well as its interplay with signalling triggered by immune receptor kinases (Yu et al. EMBO 2022). Detailed understanding of protein homeostasis systems is critical to the development of crops with improved resistance traits, which is of particular importance in the face of climate change and a growing population.
