Research associates/doctoral students in biochar and activated carbon production ( 65% position) 24 months contract 65% position according to the TV-L 13 German pay scale. We are looking for a PhD candidate within the European project “Decentralized pyrolytic conversion of agriculture and forestry wastes towards local circular value chains and sustainability” (PYRAGRAF).

The focus of PYRAGRAF is to develop a mobile and integrated plant to demonstrate the pyrolytic conversion of forestry and agriculture crop residues and wastes into added-value products.

Main duties and responsibilities: The University of Hohenheim is responsible for research within this project related to biochar production, pyrolysis oil separation, activated carbon production, as well as germination and plant growth assays. Experiments will be conducted in laboratory as well as demonstrational scale and the products will be investigated for several applications, such as renewable energy production, gas and water cleaning, and soil amendment.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree with a strong academic background in chemical engineering, chemistry, material science, environmental science or equivalent education with a grade of 2.0 (good) or better in terms of the German grading scale.
  • Good written and oral English language skills (C1, TOEFL, IELTS).
  • Creativity, ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Work experience in an analytical/technical laboratory is preferable.
  • Experimental data analysis.
  •  Knowledge of thermochemical conversion processes, ie pyrolysis process, activated carbon production, soil science.

Other desirable experience:

o Skills in Scientific Writing as well as presenting research results to the scientific community.
o Knowledge of the German language.
o Knowledge of software: MS Office, Origin, MATLAB, (AutoCAD, LabVIEW).
