Description: Drs. Marta Jarzyna and Kaiguang Zhao at The Ohio State University and Dr. Benjamin Zuckerberg at University of Wisconsin-Madison have recently been awarded a new NSF grant to investigate the avian diversity-vegetation associations. The project will explore the relationships between the multiple facets (taxonomic, functional) of avian diversity and 3D heterogeneity of vegetation structure across spatial scales from local to continental.
We will leverage bird diversity observations collected at different spatial scales, emerging remotely sensed technology (specifically, LiDAR), functional trait ecology, and statistical modeling. Applications are invited for a Ph.D. position in the Zuckerberg Lab in the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
We are seeking an outstanding Ph.D. student to lead an exciting multi-scale assessment of the relationship between bird diversity and vertical and horizontal heterogeneity of vegetation structure and the roles played by different organismal traits in structuring avian diversity across the gradient of vegetation heterogeneity.
The student’s dissertation will involve: (1) integrating bird observations from eBird and NEON with newly developed remote sensing products on vegetation structure; (2) develop species distribution models of selected bird species, parameterized by LiDAR-based products; (3) work with project collaborators to explore biodiversity-vegetation relationships at multiple scales.
The dissertation will be part of a larger project in collaboration with Drs. Marta Jarzyna and Kaiguang Zhao at The Ohio State University and Dr. Daniel Fink at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The student would be enrolled in the Wildlife Ecology Ph.D. program housed in the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at UW-Madison.
The position will begin in the spring semester of 2024 or the fall semester of 2024. Applicants must have a MS degree in ecology, wildlife, conservation, or other related discipline. We will only consider applicants with a BS degree if they have proven relevant experience. A solid working knowledge of avian ecology, GIS, and statistics are required.
Prior publication experience is preferred. Excellent English writing and verbal communication skills are essential.
