A graduate research assistantship (MS) evaluating integrated crop livestock systems is available in the Animal Sciences Department at North Dakota State University. The primary objective of this study to assess the influence of feeding cattle on cropland during the winter. Specifically, the influence livestock integration on:
1) runoff and leachate quality and quantity, 2) soil health, and 3) economic sustainability. This project will provide valuable information about the effects of different management strategies within integrated crop livestock systems, assisting producers in making management decisions. Students will be part of an inter-disciplinary team and will have the opportunity to collaborate with other graduate students and faculty.
Preferred qualifications include enthusiasm, a strong academic record, and a desire to work at the interface of ecology and the livestock industry. Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university and a valid driver’s license. Evidence of excellent written and analytical skills, as well as an interest in field research will be a plus.
Prospective students with a background in range science, ecology, animal sciences, soils, or biology are encouraged to apply. The most competitive applicant will have multiple years of field experience including previous work with livestock, soil sampling methodologies and/or vegetation assessment methodologies.
