About the Research Alliance Ruhr

The Research Alliance Ruhr was established in 2021 through a partnership between:

  • Ruhr University Bochum
  • TU Dortmund University
  • University of Duisburg-Essen

Together, these universities have created one of Europe’s largest research collaborations, bringing together approximately 14,000 researchers and 120,000 students.

The alliance focuses on addressing major global challenges through interdisciplinary research and innovation.

About the Research Center One Health Ruhr

The successful candidate will join the Research Center One Health Ruhr on the Essen Campus of the University of Duisburg-Essen.

The center adopts the internationally recognized One Health approach, integrating expertise from several disciplines, including:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Medicine
  • Environmental Science
  • Neuroscience

By combining these fields, researchers investigate how environmental factors influence both ecosystem and human health.

Research Project: Mixture Toxicity and Proteomics

Modern ecosystems are exposed to complex mixtures of chemicals rather than individual pollutants. However, predicting the combined effects of these mixtures remains a significant scientific challenge.

This doctoral project aims to improve our understanding of mixture toxicity by integrating proteomics into ecotoxicological research.

The project will investigate whether similar proteomic responses to different chemicals can be used to predict how chemical mixtures affect living organisms.

Ultimately, this research could help develop more accurate methods for environmental risk assessment and contribute to better protection of both ecosystems and human health.

The doctoral researcher will work closely with another PhD student specializing in proteomics, fostering an interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment.

Research Responsibilities

As a doctoral researcher, you will participate in both laboratory experiments and data-driven scientific research.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Conducting experiments using pollutants and environmental contaminants
  • Working with human cell lines
  • Performing experiments with invertebrates and algae
  • Measuring chemical concentrations using LC-MS/MS (Liquid Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry)
  • Processing and analyzing experimental datasets
  • Publishing research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Supporting the Ecotoxicology research group with pollution experiments and chemical analyses

The position follows a cumulative PhD model, allowing candidates to build their dissertation through published scientific papers.
