This might be the opportunity you are looking for The Project: We are recruiting a PhD candidate to join NERTHUS, a multidisciplinary European project. In this project, you will work closely with chemical engineers and microbiologists to better understand and steer soil microbiomes and soil functions at regional scale.
Your Role:
As a PhD candidate, you will:
– Assess the current status of soil functions in the Northern Netherlands and Northwestern Germany
– Design and carry out large soil sampling campaigns across both countries
– Participate in fieldwork studies
– Identify soil variables driving soil multifunctionality
– Explore the relationships between soil quality and water quality at regional scale
About Us:
Wetsus, European Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Water Technology is an internationally renowned research institute that bridges academic research and industry needs in the water technology sector. The soil research theme at Wetsus is a young, international, and dynamic group, currently hosting 10 PhD candidates working on topics ranging from manure treatment to pesticide-free agriculture.
You will be supervised by Valentina Sechi and Ángel Velasco Sánchez, with Prof. Martijn Bezemer (Leiden University) as your university promotor. You will be employed at Wetsus (Leeuwarden) with a competitive salary, and you will obtain your PhD degree from Leiden University, one of the oldest universities in The Netherlands
Requirements
- – A MSc in soil sciences, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, or related fields
- – Experience with laboratory soil analysis and standard protocols
- – Background in statistical software (e.g. R, Python)
- – Fluent English (written and spoken); Dutch and/or German is a plus
- – Ability to work well in multidisciplinary teams
- – Driving license is a plus
